An electric current is used to split water (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2). This method is not as cost-effective as using fossil fuels. Hydrogen produced by steam methane reforming costs around €1.5 per kilogram at the plant gate (excluding distribution costs) triple the cost of natural gas.

The core equipment of hydrogen generation unit by water electrolysis is Electrolyzer. It electrolyzes the water into hydrogen and oxygen under the reaction of DC. The equation is:

2H2O=2H2↑+O2

The electrolysis chamber of Electrolyzer is divided into anode chamber and cathode chamber. The solution filled with 30% KOH is called electrolyte. The hydrogen is produced in the cathode chamber, the equation is 4H2O +4 e = 2H2 ↑ +4 OH-. The hydrogen produced by the cathode chamber and the electrolyte enter the separator within the framework of ancillary equipment under the hydrogen alkali circulation pump and gas lift force for the gas-liquid separation under the action of gravity. The separated hydrogen is cooled to 30 ° C ~ 40 ° C by the hydrogen gas cooler from which the free water is removed by the hydrogen catcher. The hydrogen is passed to the next process by the film regulating valve at the rated pressure (supplied pressure). The electrolyte in the lower of hydrogen separator is drawn by the alkali circulation pump, through the eye filter (to strain out mechanical impurities in the electrolyte), the lye Cooler (bring out the heat by the cooling water caused by the water H2O decomposition, to ensure that operating temperature of electrolytic trough is constant), then return to the Electrolyzer. The total process is the circulation of hydrogen electrolyte.
